Bionx broken axle - 2nd time - and warranty question
I managed to break the axle on the Bionx on my Trek. That's twice in 3 years. I don't jump curbs and I try to avoid rough road surfaces but I am commuting in NYC and put around 3000 miles a year on the bike. Breaking an axle means that the wheel is useless even though the motor is fine because replacing the axle is a huge job, or so Bicycle Habitat says. They had a spare wheel lying around and I got it for $400. Not too bad since mostly they're around $800. This is the G1 version. Apparently the Bionx system uses a threaded freewheel instead of a cassette, and hardly anyone uses that anymore because part of the axle is unsupported and is prone to break. That' s just where this one sheared off.
Is breaking an axle that common on Bionx wheels? I haven't read much about that but I'm a pretty easy rider on it, rarely going above assist level 2, and I weigh around 190. It seems to me that breaking an axle should not happen.
The first wheel was replaced by Trek under warranty. I am absolutely unable to find out what the warranty is on my new wheel. It should be two years but all I can find on paper is the Bionx warranty covering systems, not replacement parts. I emailed Bionx last week and have heard nothing. I'll check with Bicycle Habitat when I bring the bike in to replace the freewheel in a few days - they didn't have one in stock so it just came in.
I did speak to a nice guy at NYCEWheels and he thought that breaking an axle might not be covered since the warranty is only for manufacturing defects, but I'd argue long and hard over that. A $400 or $800 dollar wheel should not break under normal usage.
Anyone know about this stuff?

When will you stop cycling?
Our aim is to cycle every country on the planet. This could take DECADES!
We plan to complete our first loop around the world in 2016 when we return to our initial starting point in France. At that point, we will have traversed all major landmasses and ridden through approximately 120 countries.
That will leave around 75 more countries to cycle though.
Some of these countries pose security risks (eg: Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen) and some are just plain hard to get to ( eg: Palau, Grenada, Cape Verde, Kiribati).
How to do you finance your bike tour around the world?
Most importantly, we live frugally. Our budget is around $500 per month for the two of us. We have a small income from rental property in Europe, so we try not to dip into savings.
What’s your favorite country?
It’s hard to pick just one so here are 5 favorites: Namibia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, and Morocco.
Do you work along the way?
No. We are too old to get working holiday visas and have not found any casual work that is well paying.
Have you ever been seriously ill?
Yes. We’ve both had malaria twice and Eric has had dengue fever and typhoid fever. Eric also broke his collar bone in Cameroon.
Have you been to any dangerous countries?
Dangerous means different things to different people so this is a tough question to answer.
We almost always feel safe on the road.
In Senegal, Cameroon, Congo, northern Kenya and southern Thailand we passed through pockets of political instability.
In Latin America countries with high rates of crime and murder (Mexico, Venezuela, Honduras, Guatemala) we were more vigilant than in other parts of the world.
How many kilometers to you ride per day?
We ride about 100 kilometers per day on average. On a few occasions we’ve ridden more than 200 kilometers in a day thanks to favorable winds and a flat road.
Where will you settle down after your tour is finished?
We’re not sure yet. We were living in Germany before we left and if a good job opportunity came up we might return there. Otherwise we will probably retire somewhere in Asia where our savings will stretch further.
Do you have health insurance?
Yes! We think it’s important to be covered in case of a serious illness or accident. We use AVI insurance.
Do you go back home to visit?
We have been back to France twice and to the USA twice. We incorporate family visits into the cycle tour.
Are you still riding the same bikes?
Eric had to replace his bike after it was stolen in Bolivia. I am riding my original Koga—it’s now got over 125,000 kilometers on it.
Where do you sleep?
We do a lot of couchsurfing and use the Warm Showers hospitality network.
In expensive countries (Western Europe, North America, Australia, NZ) we NEVER go to hotels, youth hostals or guesthouses.
We very rarely go to private campgrounds, RV parks or caravan parks.
We often do wild camping or ask at a farm if we can pitch the tent.

A Forgotten World
One reason bicycle touring is so beloved is that it drags us away from all the distractions of daily life.
While out riding, we stop obsessing over Twitter followers, Facebook likes and the latest i-phone apps. Being out on the bike, we distance ourselves from the latest political upheavals and forget about Islamist militants in Mali, budget cuts in Europe and the widening gap between rich and poor in the US.
No distractions here!
Here’s the spot!
Need to get away from it all? I can’t think of a better place than the Forgotten World Highway. This New Zealand North Island ride is 180 kilometers of remote countryside miles from anywhere. There are no supermarkets or souvenir shops, no tour buses and hardly any traffic.
What you will find is sheep and cows. The odd farmhouse, eerie settlements long deserted, and deep gorges covered in native forest. There’s even one rogue township (Whangamomona) which has asserted its independence and claims to be a Republic.
The Forgotten World Highway, I should point out, runs through some of New Zealand’s most rugged and scenic countryside. This is not a ride for those unprepared to give the pedals some serious cranking! There are hills, my friend, and lots of ‘em!
We warmed up for the Forgotten World on a nice stretch of coastal cycleway near New Plymouth. We’d just said goodbye to our Warm Showers hosts, Rhys and Diana. It was an eventful departure, with Diana bursting in at the last moment with fresh rabbit roadkill for Gerald, the family dog.
Those are the travel moments that always stick with me.

Another World!
With the easy cycleway cruising behind us, we headed into the hills. The traffic soon petered out and we found ourselves alone with flocks of bleating sheep and curious cows wandering across the road.
Most of the Forgotten World Highway is paved–which is good because you need a nice smooth surface to tackle all the steep climbs.
In a couple of spots, the NZ government hasn’t gotten around to pouring tar. You wouldn’t think 15 kilometers of gravel would be a big deal. After all, If gravel is well packed it can be almost as good as a sealed road.
But when somebody from the highway department has just dumped a big load of fresh gravel and left it to be worked in by passing vehicles, you’re in trouble.
The bikes are almost impossible to control on such a surface. It’s like cycling on marbles. The tires (even our excellent Schwalbes) quickly lost their grip. It takes all your concentration not to tumble.
Idyllic! At least till the rough stuff set in!
That night we pitched up at a farm run by sweet faced grandmother. She was a recent widow. Lonely, I suppose, but unwilling to leave the land she loved. Before dawn the next morning, she was out in her wellington boots scattering feed for the chickens and milking the cows.
After our usual porridge (better these days with the addition of coconut flakes), we hopped on our bikes and bid her farewell.
We bumped along the gravel road, surrounded by emerald green pastures. We made good time up and over another steep climb. In fact, it was up and down all day long. We crossed paths with a couple other cyclists. They were pushing decidedly less loaded bikes and I felt the slightest tinge of envy as they roared past.
But when it gets right down to it, I’m not willing to give up my little extras (big computer, pillow, yoga mat, extra clothes, serious stocks of food) for a lighter load.
This is the good gravel! The stuff that's been worn smooth over months of use.
Finally we made it over the last big hill before Taumarunui (and the end of the Forgotten World Highway) and called it quits for the day. Our legs were heavy with fatigue and it was time to fire up the stove and prepare a big plate of pasta.
We discovered an abandoned farmhouse and decided to set camp up out back. The water tap was still flowing, so we filled up our Ortlieb bladder, attached the shower nozzle, stripped down and rinsed off a couple days of sweat and grime. It was with great satisfaction that we dove into the tent for a well-deserved rest.
A storm front rolled in overnight. You can experience all four seasons in a day, that’s what they say about New Zealand weather. Our final Forgotten World Highway kilometers were cranked out hunkered down in a deluge.
We rolled into Taumarunui soaked to the bone. The rest of the day was spent huddled in the public library surfing the internet on the free WiFi. We were back to the real world.

Dog owners have many methods of training their dogs to choose from today. A number of these methods use only positive reinforcement; others utilize positive and negative reinforcement while others use incentives like treats. The difference in dog training techniques mainly lies in the specific procedures and commands that the dog is being trained. The most appropriate training technique for a dog depends on the dog owner’s or the trainer’s preference and the desired end result.
No matter the training method, these tips will substantially assist you understand and choose the best training technique for your dog.
Dog training Tip 1
Start the training when the dog is still as young as possible. However, it is not practical to train a dog younger than 49 days.

At the beginning, the training sessions should not last over 15 minutes. At advanced stages, dog training may go on for up to several hours but a beginner dog has a short attention and interest span. Other phrases that should not be used are phrases like “Please sit”, “come and sit”, “Sit boy” etc.

Play the dog’s favorite game for at least 5 minutes after the training to make the dog excited about the training. This will boost a positive experience and make it look forward to training sessions.

Use the same volume and tone in instructing the dog. You can make a special “command tone” so that the dog can have an easy time understanding the commands each time. However, after the training, practicing with different tones, volume or even by different people will assist reinforce the commands.

This is a great item for a beginner learning to train their puppy. My dog had a litter and while I was waiting to find them new homes, I used the clicker method to train the puppy’s. I am pleased to say that every one that received one of my puppy’s is thrilled at their level of training. The cost was nominal, but the rewards are great. Looking Back on 2012
2012 has been a good year for us. It is, quite possibly, the only year I haven’t seriously contemplated giving up this bicycle touring gig.
The year began on the hazardous Chinese highways (with a missing passport no less!) and comes to a close on an alpaca farm in the Southlands region of New Zealand.
We covered some 20,000 kilometers in eleven countries on two continents and have faced the usual challenges—headwinds and heat, crazed and contemptible drivers, days in the saddle far too long for comfort.
Those trying times have been quickly forgotten as serendipity intercepted to bring good things our way. By things, what I really mean is people. Fleeting interactions with folks that boost morale and leave a positive mark on our lives. Strangers that become friends.
Yes, 2012 has been one of the best bicycle touring years yet. And here are a few of the highlights.

Review : How to avoid the melted bar problem…
First, the bars taste good, just pick a flavor you like. Second, the nutrition mix is perfect with very low carbs and a good protein weight. I could buy more expensive bars elsewhere, with slightly better stats, but these are great!
Some report melting problems. When it is hot and you get a shipment, don’t open the box or take the shrink wrap off (if it is), just put it in the freezer for an hour or so, then sit on the counter. The chocolate and fill will return to solid form, and not stick to the wrappers when you unwrap a bar to eat it.
I’ve been using these kinds of products for 40 years (Joe Weider and York Barbell started it all) and the EAS bars are fantastic, newbies just need to learn how to deal with summer heat issues.
