Cool new music store features, plus new Vimeo for everyone

You know it, I know it, and our ears know it: Videos and music go great together. Traditionally, this has required gathering an entire kazoo orchestra around your computer, but we just launched two new humdinger Music Store features that make it easier than ever to juxtapose audio with your visuals.

The big new feature is the Enhancer, a cool dropdown tool that enables you to add music to your videos right inside Music Store — no editing software required! Use the Enhancer to select a video, pick a track from Music Store, and put them together in like three seconds flat. You can even adjust the music and video volume levels like a DJ working the crossfader at the club. The Enhancer is quite powerful, but also incredibly easy to use: If you know how to drag and drop, you can rock the Enhancer.

To accomplish said rocking, visit the Music Store and hit the "Enhance Videos" tab in the upper right corner, or click right here. Right now the Enhancer is just for music, but we'll be adding more magical powers to it in the very near future.

The other delightful development is that the Music Store catalog now contains almost 4,000 tracks from our new music partner SmartSound, which you can customize to perfectly match your video and creative vision. You can customize each track's length, change the mood by adjusting the instrumentation, or select different variations of each track. (And yes, you do it all inside the Enhancer.)

SmartSound tracks are designated by the cute little gear icon in Music Store. They cost $1.99 each with a personal license, or $19.99 each with a commercial license, which either way is a lot cheaper than hiring a fleet of kazooists.

While we're on the subject of new stuff, you may have noticed that the new Vimeo is now the only Vimeo. We've completed the full launch and everyone who goes to Vimeo.com experiences our much cooler, insanely improved Internet website. We already gave you a rundown of the manifold new Vimeo features that will change your life, but we've since packed even more newness into it! For example:

  • Jump-to-anywhere player — Skip to the middle of a video or see how it all ends
  • A new site just for developers — Especially for code jockeys and API aficionados
  • Recommended members to follow — We can help you make new friends
  • Improved stats design — Enjoy a more handsome view of some hard data
  • New logged-out homepage — This is where we tell people what makes us the best
  • Forum redesign — We made it easier to find the info you need
  • "Private" banner on private videos — So you always know who can see what

We'd tell you where you can go to check out the new Vimeo, but, well, you're on it right now. We hope you love it!

A Facebook Ad Campaign That Actually Works business insider

So. Much. Love.

As you might be able to tell from the title, this post is going to be a bit sappy / cheesy / whatever word you want to use for someone expressing how grateful they are for the people in their life. So, if you’re not feeling it, you may want to step away now. You have been warned.

—————-

I am completely amazed and humbled by the people I have in my life. Since making the move back to the South, I continue to be surprised by the generosity and love that surrounds me.

In most of the moves I’ve made, it’s been for my career, and often I find myself in cities where I know very few people, if anyone at all. Moving to Atlanta no was different, though I did know plenty of people at my work, and thankfully I have some pretty badass co-workers. But again, I found myself having to navigate a new city, a new dropzone and it was all a bit intimidating.

Thankfully, those who I considered good friends upon my arrival here have proved to be that, and so much more. A close friend and her husband have practically adopted me into their family. We take trips to the dog park (even our dogs are friends) and spend time at their house just shooting the shit. They have gone out of their way to help me get adjusted and I’m eternally grateful to have such generous friends who live right down the street from me.

I truly am blessed to be surrounded by good people day in and day out. I have a handful of amazing friends (which, if you know anything about me, you know that’s all I need to live a happy life, just a handful of people I can count on…it beats having 100 acquaintances that you’re not entirely sure would lend you had hand or an ear in a time of need) who continue to impress me with their love and support. Every week I see my bocce team which is a hodgepodge of different personalities, all of whom have stolen my heart in one way or the other and I not only look forward to our Wednesday games, but often crave the post-game team bonding over drinks and dinner.

And as for skydiving, I continue to be impressed with the community here in the South. So far I’ve only visited two local dropzones, but I’ve been more than welcomed at both and I get to take part in my first Sisters in Skydiving event this weekend at The Farm, which I know will be nothing shy of incredible.

That doesn’t change the fact that Skydive Chicago still holds a VERY special place in my heart. I am so grateful for the experiences I’ve had there – and the ones I will continue to have. Without Skydive Chicago and the amazing individuals I’ve made connections with, I’m not sure I’d have come back to the sport in full force after my hip injury. The community there lifted me up, showed me the way and reminded me of the pure passion I have for the sport. It really is my home DZ in my heart…I am counting down the days till I return for Summerfest!

After Summerfest I get to come back to the South and spend time with a dear friend that I feel so lucky to have known for the last year who will be moving hundreds of miles away to go back to school – but before that we will share some QT in her home town and I’ll get to soak up some of her amazingly positive energy before saying goodbye.

Lately I’ve been hearing from a lot of old friends, some I haven’t conversed with (aside from the occasional Facebook comment) in years, and it’s as if we picked up right where we left off. You know you’ve got true friends when so much time can pass and all you need is a simple phone call to spark the excitement that’s always surrounded the relationship. There are still some friends that I’m trying to wrangle a phone or Skype convo out of – ahem, Brandye, if you’re reading this, we must make this happen – but that’s been the unfortunate story of our post-college friendship that somehow works for us and we too are able to pick up right where we left off, usually with a 2 hour conversation to catch up!

Regardless of where in the world these people in my network reside, I feel the love on a daily basis and am beyond grateful. I often wonder what I did to deserve such wonderful individuals in my life – though I’m not going to spend too much time questioning it. I’d much rather spend that time enjoying their company, smiling and laughing along the way.

Love and blue skies!

Ashley

A Short History and Profile of the Parson Russell Terrier

When I tell people that I have a Parson Russell Terrier, they usually have no idea what I’m talking about. So then I end up just saying that she is a Jack Russell and leaving it at that. Nearly everyone has heard of a Jack Russell, but the Parson isn’t very well known because the breed name has been around for less than 10 years!

For decades all of these little white terriers were known as Jack Russells. The fox hunting terriers were developed in the 1800s in England, by Reverend John Russell.

Jack Russell
However, over time these dogs began to vary in shape and size. The Jack Russell Terrier Club of America (JRTCA) was originally the only club in America that would register these dogs, and all dogs registered with the the JRTCA were called Jack Russells. The JRTCA dogs range in size from 10”-15” at the shoulder. Many Jack Russells have very short legs, and are “rectangular” in appearance. I know that whenever I picture a Jack Russell, I think of a very short legged dog. They are very cute, but I have always been more fond of a dog with legs proportionate to their body size.

Parson Russell
Eventually the AKC recognized the Jack Russell breed in 1997. In 2003 the name was changed Parson Russell Terrier to avoid any confusion with the JRTCA dogs. The AKC standard for the Parson Russell calls for a dog between 12 and 14 inches, so you won’t ever see any of the “shortie jacks” being called Parson Russells. Parsons are only a bit longer than they are tall, so they will appear to be more “square.” Both Jack and Parson Russells come in 3 coat types: smooth, broken and rough. Do your research to decide which is the best coat type for you.

Despite the confusion with the name, Jack and Parson Russells have very similar personalities, since they all developed from similar lines. As with most terriers, these are very active dogs, and may be hard to train for the average dog owner.

Begin training your Parson as soon as you bring him home. They are very capable of learning almost any behavior when they are still puppies. If left untrained, they will decide to do everything their own way, and you will probably regret it. Once your Parson Russell has formed certain habits, they can be extremely hard to break, because they are very stubborn dogs.

Always meet the parents before you purchase a puppy. If the parents show any signs of aggression or are extremely hyper, you will want to stay away from that litter.

My Juno
A properly bred Parson Russell Terrier is a smart and loving companion. If you do your research and buy from a breeder who breeds for good temperament, you will have a loving companion. When I got my first Parson Russell Terrier, I was terrified that she would become a hyperactive crazy dog, but instead I ended up with the best dog I have ever owned, and I wouldn’t trade her for the world.

Bing for Mobile Embraces HTML5 for Android, iOS

Microsoft has updated its Bing for Mobile app for iPhone and Android, adding some new features and bringing the experience more in line with the experience offered on Windows Phone.

"Today's update uses HTML5 to blend the mobile browse experience with the app experience so you get a consistent and fast mobile search experience," read a Nov. 2 posting on the Bing Community blog, "whether you're using m.bing.com from your browser or the Bing app."

Microsoft's Windows Phone tightly bakes Bing's search engine into the interface, blurring the line between traditional browser-based search and the platform's "Metro" interface. Evidently, Microsoft seems interested in extending aspects of that experience to other smartphone platforms.

"Rather than tightly binding functions into a mobile client, we want to embrace the drive towards exposing our functions via an HTML5 experience," the blog post added. "Using HTML5, our goal is to build a mobile experience that leverages the unique capabilities" of platforms such as camera support and voice search, while "making the functions the apps can provide consistent across the platforms."

In addition, this app update also includes Deals, which the blog describes as "one-stop deal shopping and convenient mobile phone access for local deals from more than 100 deal providers across the United States." It makes Bing's video domain, launched in October on m.bing, available on the iPhone. The Android version of the app offers a combination of real-time transit routing and news. And the Maps/List Split View allows users to synchronize a list, such as directions, into a single view alongside a map.

Microsoft is apparently aiming to release the same experience for Research In Motion's BlackBerry devices at some unnamed point in the future. For the moment, the Android and iOS apps are available on their respective app stores.
