Good Times on the Great Ocean Road
America’s got the Pacific Coast Highway, Australia’s got the Great Ocean Road. Both are stunningly beautiful with jaw-dropping views. Both are prone to the kind of weather that sends sane cyclists to an indoor spinning class. And both are worth the effort even in torrential rains and gale force winds.
The Great Ocean Road is by far the flatter and shorter (just under 300 KMS) of the two. Like Highway One in the US, the GOR hugs the coast, twisting and turning along the Southern Ocean. At times the highway turns inland, climbing up into the heavily-forested hinterland. There are fishing villages, and quaint little towns full of tourists sipping coffee at street side cafes. It’s a fun ride but best avoided on weekends and school holidays when the area is flooded with day-trippers from Melbourne.

The ride couldn't be more beautiful! Relatively empty roads mid-week and off season. But watch out for the wind--gusts could knock you off your bike.
This rugged section of the GOR is known as the Shipwreck Coast. Explorer Matthew Flinders said of the Shipwreck Coast, "I have seldom seen a more fearful section of coastline."
Just down the road is the iconic Twelve Apostles--a collection of limestone formations--these days 12 are no longer visible.
Checking out the "London Arch." This formation used to be known as "London Bridge" until part of the arch collapsed into the sea.
Plenty of welcoming cafes and trendy eateries along the way.
And there's no shortage of spots to trundle on down to the beach--swim at your own risk--the water is fiercely cold and the current strong.
Most of all, the Great Ocean Road is all about enjoying the fantastic views of this ruggedly beautiful coastline,

Health and Diet
There is no greater reason to diet than for your personal health and well being. What most people who are overweight need more than anything else is to incorporate positive lifestyle changes into their daily routines. People scoff at the notion of taking the stairs or parking farther away and yet those are perfectly plausible methods of working a little more physical activity into your day. If those do not work for you how about learning to dance? Seriously, there are beginner dance classes in most communities that will welcome and invite dances of all ages, sizes, and fitness levels if you are willing to make the effort. What a great way to get fit, learn something new, and have fun without filling deprived.
Another great thing about an activity such as a dance class (consider ballroom dancing with your significant other) is that you are not eating or tempted to eat during the time that you are dancing in most cases. Another great thing is that you are burning those calories you didn’t eat. If dancing isn’t you thing, try joining a walking club or finding another hobby. Anything that gets you on your feet and away from the temptation of your refrigerator is a good thing when it comes to dieting and weight loss. You cannot lose a significant amount of weight by dieting alone. You must incorporate physical fitness into your daily routine in order to achieve those immediate and visually stunning results that many dieters are hoping to achieve.
Another pitfall when it comes to dieting is that people give up far too quickly. Just as the results are beginning and progressing people get tired of the process or frustrated that they aren’t accomplishing enough dramatic weight loss as quickly as they had hoped and give up all together marking off yet another failure when they could have achieved greater success than ever before if they had stuck with their original diet plan a little longer.
One more thing you should remember when it comes to dieting is that the scale can be your best friend or your worst enemy when dieting. If you are weighing yourself every day in hopes of watching the scale tick off yet another pound you are dooming yourself to failure. You will never achieve the results you are hoping for you if you are going into depressive bouts of Rocky Road or Chunky Monkey every night because you didn’t lose 10 pounds overnight.
When it comes to dieting there are very few diets that work. There are however, many lifestyle changes that when practiced consistently and aggressively will work. The thing to remember is that you are the one who must work because it is quite unlikely that any diet will.

Headwinds, Flies and Forest Fires
Rugged coastline, pristine beaches, sleepy fishing villages, rolling farmland, world-class diving and spectacular seafood. The Eyre Peninsula has it all according to the Australia Tourism Board.
Given our shoestring budget, I knew the last two were out. But those first four, well, they sounded pretty damn enticing after the bleakness of the Nullarbor Plain.
Yes, I had high hopes for this little-visited corner of South Australia. That is, until we butted bikes with a less-than-tempting trio: headwinds, flies and forest fires!
First came the wind. It batted us about as soon as we set off from Ceduna. Headwinds are the morale sinking, depression inducing, curse causing scourge of any cyclist’s existence. In case that’s not clear—HEADWINDS SUCK!
Near day’s end, we rolled the bikes into a metal shed on the beach north of Streaky Bay and crumpled onto the floor in exhaustion. Fighting winds is tough work. And all the more difficult because your enemy is invisible. Not like a big steep menacing mountain. That kind of opponent you can size up and conquer. Not so with the wind.
We were fortunate to have a shed to sleep in. The coastal winds might have done with our tent what Sandy did to New York. I’m afraid it wouldn’t have been a pretty sight. We weer most grateful for a real roof over our heads, even if it was one that clattered and banged.
Later we stumbled out on the beach for what turned out to be a magnificent sunset. A gratifying and glorious moment that strengthened us to keep dueling with the elements.

Next came the flies. The headwinds keep the flies at bay, so they’re useful in that sense. Australian flies excel at breeding and diversifying. I’ve read that the continent has over 6,000 species of the annoying creatures. Unless you are of particularly stoic stock or don’t mind spending your days ingesting unwanted critters, a head net is essential gear in Australia. We’ve got fly-proof net jackets with hoods to keep the flies at bay.
The jackets can get a bit hot and they’re scratchy but the alternative is playing host to hundreds of bothersome flies.
But here’s the real problem. Bicycle touring is all about being up close to nature. But with the head net on, it’s like viewing the world through a Burka. Our vision is seriously impaired. It’s like having your head pressed up against a screen door all day long. Headwinds or head nets—I’m not sure which one is worse.

A friendly sheep farmer on the Eyre Peninsula who spontaneously invited us in for the night.
Then came the forest fires. In hope of escaping the wind, we decided to cut inland. The interior of the peninsula was dry and dusty, mostly used for sheep and cattle ranching. As we cycled into the tiny town of Locke (okay maybe not cycled in…the town’s friendly mayor actually gave us a lift the last 6 kilometers or so…headwinds again), we discovered the small farming community had been put on Catastrophic Fire Watch.
Temperatures had soared up to 100+ Fahrenheit (42 Celsius) and the land was tinderbox dry. Winds the following day were forecast at 45-65 KMPH with gusts up to 85 KMPH. (Sadly not blowing in our favor.) Schools had been closed and farmers were prohibited from harvesting for fear their heavy machinery might spark a flame. We pegged down the tent extra tight and hoped for the best.
The mighty wind raged throughout the night, but our Big Agnes fought back with gusto, just as she had in Patagonia. A few fires were set off in the region. Mostly further south near Port Lincoln, where we might have been trapped had we followed our original route. We were safe and sound in Locke.

The last few days have been almost perfect. Just the way I remember bike touring in our early days back in Europe. We followed the Reisling Bike Trail through the wine growing region of the Clare valley and then hopped on to the Rattler Trail, a rough track running through some of South Australia’s most stunning countryside. Finally we cruised into Adelaide on a warm, sunny and relatively wind-free Saturday afternoon.
Next up is the lonely Limestone coast and then on to the grand finale: the Great Ocean Road and a triumphant ride into Melbourne. At least I hope that’s how it turns out!

Top 5 Reasons to Go Bicycle Touring in Liberia
In Liberia you will feel like you’re the only tourist in the country. It wouldn’t suprise me if you actually will be. So, why pedalling over there, you might ask?
Well, here are 5 very good reasons.
Not in any particular order (How could you compare The forests of Liberia to The people of Liberia?), but still 5 good reasons to get there!
1. Yekepa and Mount Nimba.
Imagine yourself riding along a lonely dirtroad in northern Liberia. All of a sudden the red dirt turns to old asphalt and the wireless poles are joining the road. After a few more minutes, old rusty machines make their presence at the right side of your handle bar. A small distance behind the machines are large rusty warehouses. On the left side there is a large field full of old houses with no roofs nor windows. These evidence of the former mining town of Yekepa countinue to be your company as the old road makes it turnes up on a small hill. This abandoned town has has a spooky feeling and with the impressive Mount Nimba as a backdrop it gives you a surely surreal feeling…

2. Forest of Liberia
It´s thick, it´s green and it seems like no-one knows anything about the area from Buchanan to Gbarnga. It´s not totally another matter from when Graham Greene did his famous hike in the country in 1936. In neighboring countries, people in the villages knew the names and distance to the next town. In Liberia, if you are lucky, the people know the name of the next village.
There are some trucks and a few UN vehicles passing as you pedal up and down the hills along the roads of orange mud. The roadside is a green wall. A kind of forest you may not have seen since you took a rest at Tiwai-Island some weeks ago. In the nightime it´s you and nature. Only the weak lights from the torches interrupt the stars. The torches lighting up the villages for…

3. The Liberian people
You may find the Liberians quite rough.
They are for sure not as overwhelmingly friendly as you are used to from cycling in Guinea, and some officials might be suspicious and a bit uneasy with your presence. The rough accent might even scare you off a bit. But, and notice this, as soon as you chat with them they get as friendly as you´d might expect from visiting other countries around the continent.
Most of the police and military are curious and friendly as are the people in the villages. I slept for free at two different police stations and had two great evenings being taught how to prepare bushmeat and other food the local way. Another place where there are friendly locals is at the small village of Sawilo, while you are waiting for the boat to cross…
4. Lake Piso
The boat from Sawilo do show up, but there´s not enough people in Sawilo to make the way back profitable. Well, instead of waiting in Sawilo you´ll take a small boat.
A very small plank-boat indeed. It’s a little less space than enough for you, your bike and a the paddling guy, but you´ll fit in with some balancing skills. The boat is making its progress slowly up a river. Then it makes a turn facing a massive, but low, mangrove forest. You´ll enter the forest through a small channel. If you´ll let your hands out you´ll touch the trees and bushes which are growing like walls and ceilings around you.
The sun shines through the branches and you´ll see small fish playing around in the shallow water. The only thing you can hear are the birds singing and the monotone low splashes from the paddle. After almost an hour of delight from Mother Nature you´ll leave the forest behind and in front of you is the magical Lake Piso. You´ll see fishermen catching today’s fish and in the horizon you´ll see a tiny string of beach. Just a few meters of sand seperating Lake Piso from the ocean. At the left end of the string you´ll see a village. Slowly but surely the village grows while you get closer. After an hour or so you´ll enter the natural harbour of…

5. Robertsport
The colourful fishing boats are waiting on a row for the right time to sail. On the other side of the town, which you´ll feel is more like a village, is the beach. Small houses are spread out between the old concrete road and the beach.
Do you want to cycle to Robertsport to experience a beach, you might ask yourself. Well, if you’re into beaches, you will. The beach seems to go on forever and you won’t find many people around. But, if you’re like me, you´ll go here to experience the small surfing scene of Liberia. The local surfing hero, Alfred, is studying in Monrovia at the moment, and after the movie “Sliding Liberia” he has become a bit of a legend in this area. You´ll find a few guys surfing quite well and some small boys playing around with old boards and under the big silk tree at the beach you can rent a board. After drinking a few litres of salt water you´ll realise why you are a cyclist and not a surfer…
Upperhill Robertsport has a few large abandoned buildings that can tell it is a former holiday destination, and a few houses giving you the South America vibe. The feeling of Robertsport’s past as a holiday resort and the idea that tourism might be growing, will certainly give you the feeling that you´re there at just about the right time…

How to Mixing Wall Color with Furniture
Did you ever realized that your chosen furniture has the wrong color? Did you find that the rustic furniture you purchased at a local dept store wasn’t appropriate for the room? Did you use a wrong combination of color for the room?
Mixing colors for some people is an inventive thing. But it is no more than just a splash of paint for others. The furniture needs the same treatment. The option of colors and the room will determine the compatibility of the colors. Matching the wall color with the furniture color is a must. Choosing some contrasting colors is another way. Experimenting which colors that work well is worth trying. Matching some parts of the entire surfaces is another way to try.
Deciding the right furniture is just easy once you’ve decided the right furniture color, except if you give your walls a fine paint job. (yeah, some people really do that).
Decide the main color scheme from the color that occupies most of the room, for matching or contrast, you can use that color. Once the color scheme is identified you can move the former furniture from different rooms to test it out, or shop for your new furniture. Duplicating colors both for the furniture and the walls are quite difficult thus colors don’t have to be so obvious. A little difference in the options of color are okay as they aren’t too obvious.
It is up to you to perceive the colors. The consideration for the color is that they must be attractive to everyone’s eyes and seen in the nearest location of the room. It could be near the set of dining chairs next to a fireplace, or could be the couch fabric with the wall, or even the bookshelf. In a combination room, these colors are really helpful.
The furniture and the walls are limited by the match of your color. The floor colors can be used to coordinate the furniture with the walls, of course with some imagination. The perceived color scheme can be added to the carpet, tiles, and wood. You can find out how the color scheme influence the furniture that sit on them also how they influence the adjacent walls.
What you need is a rearrangement of furniture and a careful planning then match them with the right environment and where ever you see, there will be colorful view and attractive items.
