Touring Tip: Riding In A Proper State Of Mind

Written By:  Jim Parks, RoadRUNNER Motorcycle Touring & Travel

It’s been observed that operating a motorcycle is 90% mental and only 10% physical.  In addition, scientists tell us that we are not consciously aware of most of what the mind is doing in everyday life.  Do you consciously think about breathing or making your heartbeat or which foot operates your bike’s gearshift? Like an iceberg, some 90% of the brain’s activity is taking place below the conscious surface. This may fly in the face of some historic perceptions of motorcyclists as brawny he-men muscling heavyweight cruiser-type bikes down the road.

The predominance of an expert rider’s mind, over his or her physical strength, was never made more clear to me than during a track school day.  The students were overwhelmingly males, riding large displacement bikes.  They would streak down the track’s straightaway at warp speed, but then almost panic and brake to a near stop before entering the upcoming hairpin curve.  This was followed by them riding tentatively around the ensuing chicanes, s-curves and sweepers before again launching into rocket-mode on the straightaway.

Meanwhile, the instructors, one of which was a petite female riding a Suzuki SV650, were passing the students with such ease that the scene was almost comical.  Clearly muscle power and physical prowess were not ruling the day and, for that matter, neither was the significantly higher horsepower of the students’ mounts.  Through the course of the class, it became painfully obvious (although not in the physical sense) that superior riding skills were mostly due to mental training and focus, not bicep size.  The day ended with a cadre of humbled, but wiser and more proficient student riders.

How does this all relate to your next motorcycle tour?  The mental aspect of riding a motorcycle safely is of paramount importance, regardless of whether you’re riding to the neighborhood Starbucks or going cross-country.  I’ve organized my tips for “riding in a proper state of mind” into the following three categories:
  1. Before the Ride:  Similar to going through a mechanical checklist of your bike before riding it, perform a mental status Q & A before hitting the starter button.
  • Am I fit, relaxed and calm?  As noted above, riding a motorcycle proficiently and safely on the street requires a high degree of mental focus.  That focus will be impaired if a rider is tired, emotionally upset or mentally distracted with other pressing matters.  Make sure you’re rested and able to concentrate on the mental demands of motorcycling.
  • Have I considered the weather, road and other riding challenges I’m likely to encounter on today’s ride?  Mentally project the riding conditions you are likely to encounter during the upcoming day’s ride so you will be mentally (and physically) prepared to deal with them; this also will reduce the likelihood of you encountering unanticipated problems.  This is somewhat like an athlete envisioning a winning performance.
  • Was the last bike I rode different than the one I’m on now?  Each motorcycle has its own unique handling and riding characteristics.  Once your subconscious mind has been programmed on one bike, it usually stays programmed for that bike, at least for a period of time.  Consequently, it’s usually wise not to ride your current mount aggressively, until the reprogramming has taken hold.
  • Am I preoccupied with thoughts other than those about today’s ride?  If your conscious mind becomes focused on something other than the ride, the important external sensory information needed for safe riding is probably being compromised.  Your subconscious mind may well know how to operate the motorcycle, but it may not be perceiving and processing possible threats, such as a stray dog running loose, debris in the road, a car entering from a driveway or a hundred other potential risks.  Sometimes, distracted riders will automatically slow down, miss a turn, blow a curve or exhibit some other warning signal that lets them know their mental focus is compromised.  If this happens to you, or you observe it in a fellow rider, it’s time to take a break and get refocused.
  • Are riding conditions distracting my concentration?  Much of our passion for riding emanates from our experiencing the surrounding environment with all five senses.  Those sensory experiences, though, can become mentally distracting if they’re too intense, usually in the form of heat or cold.  Riders also can become distracted from physical discomfort, like a full bladder, a headache or some other malady.  Riders should identify and eliminate the distraction at the earliest opportunity.  Whether it’s stopping to cool down with a cold drink, adjusting layers of clothing, using the restroom or something else, it’s important to alleviate the cause of the mental distraction.
  1. During the Ride:  It’s important to monitor your state of mind and how it’s affecting your riding while you’re motoring along. Ask yourself these questions:

This is not to suggest, however, that riding a motorcycle will always be as comfortable as riding in an air conditioned car.  It clearly won’t be, but riders should take the actions necessary to minimize physical discomfort when that discomfort is sufficiently high enough to compromise their mental focus.  If the discomfort is moderate and not physically threatening, here’s a technique I’ve used quite successfully:  just don’t think about it!
  • Am I in “the zone”?  When someone first learns to ride a motorcycle, they have to consciously think about the actions necessary to operate their machine: let out the clutch, twist the throttle, change gears, look through the corner, push on the handlebars, properly apply braking, etc.  Before venturing out on the street, however, these actions have to be practiced and become second nature, not requiring any conscious thinking.

To obtain a high level of riding proficiency and safety, however, motorcyclists must substantially expand and refine their basic riding skills.  There are literally hundreds of additional techniques to be learned and riders should make progress learning and mastering them every year.  Each new skill, whether it is learning how to ride through curves more effectively or adding new street survival skills for avoiding accidents, the process is always the same.  Practice the technique until performing it becomes automatic or until it has migrated from your conscious mind to your subconscious mind.  Riders always know when they’re riding with their mind, because they get that very pleasurable “Zen” or “in the zone” feeling of effortlessly flowing with the road.  If you’re not flowing with the road, figure out why.
  1. After the Ride:  To continuously improve your riding and safety skills, it’s important to answer several questions after the ride:
  • What did I do or not do today that could have led to an accidentAt the conclusion of the day’s ride, debrief yourself on whether you made decisions or took actions that increased your risk of an accident.  For example, was I riding too aggressively around several blind curves or was there a “close call” that I could have avoided?
  • What were the lessons learned today for future rides?  After your debriefing and self-evaluation, make a mental note of any changes needed to your riding style and strategy that will make you a better and safer rider in the future.

There’s no reason that proficient riding lessons learned have to be learned the hard way.  Use your head and ride safe.

Weekend Project: Foley Fun

Hey there! It's almost the weekend, and that means it's time to have some fun.

For this Weekend Project, we want you to include some foley sounds into a video. What is foley, you ask? Well - it's the art of reproducing and creating sounds for film. We've recorded 10 sounds especially for you to use in a video you'll be creating this weekend. You need to use at least 5 of these sounds in your finished project.

Let your imagination run wild! We want to see all sorts of styles - narrative, experimental, claymation - as long as it's got our sounds in it, it's all good!

If you want to learn a little bit more about foley artistry, you can do that by checking out this Vimeo Video School lesson.

Here are some things you need to know:

1) Download the foley sounds here.
2) You must use at least 5 of the 10 sounds we have given you. You may use more than 5.
3) You don't have to use the entire sound clip, you can trim it if you want to.
4) In your video description, please point out at what times in your video the sounds are placed

Nearly Half of Harvard Government Class Is Suspected of Cheating

harvard

There's not a school in the world that doesn't have a policy against cheating and plagiarism but they never seem to deter some students from taking a dishonest shortcut to a good grade—not even students attending the oldest and most prestigious university in the country. Indeed, the Harvard Crimson reports that the the school's "disciplinary board is investigating nearly half of the 279 students who enrolled in Government 1310: 'Introduction to Congress'" (oh, the irony!) "last spring for allegedly plagiarizing answers or inappropriately collaborating on the class’ final take-home exam."

The mass cheating came to light after the class' professor noticed similarities in several of the exams. He took them to Harvard's administrative board last May. That board found about half were suspicious. The university's dean of undergraduate education, Jay M. Harris, called the level of cheating "unprecedented in anyone's living memory." Harris and other school administrators emailed all faculty and students at the school notifying them of the investigation. He told the Crimson that the school had already been planning to re-raise the issue of academic integrity and so this incident is a "teaching opportunity."

The students who cheated in this particular class surely received Harvard's policy on plagiarism, which clearly states, "It is expected that all homework assignments, projects, lab reports, papers, theses, and examinations and any other work submitted for academic credit will be the student’s own." The consequence of possibly being required to withdraw from Harvard if found guilty of plagiarism doesn't seem to be much of a deterrent since so many students are taking the risk.

It would certainly help if the school's faculty avoided plagiarism scandals of their own, but student cheating isn't just a problem at Harvard. What more does every school need to do to ensure students don't do it?

Can Schools Teach Entrepreneurship?

student.entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs are never born, only created. If you really think about it, entrepreneurship is a mindset and that mindset has to be a lifestyle—when you "own" it, you can run with any idea. So can schools actually teach entrepreneurship? Yes and no.

In the 1990s, a Kauffman Foundation study found that two-thirds of high school students wanted to become entrepreneurs. Unfortunately, the same study discovered that more than 80 percent felt they had not learned anything about entrepreneurship in school. Given our current industrial model of education that has produced compliant employees, the results are no surprise. Entrepreneurship can’t be taught in the traditional sense with textbooks, lectures, and worksheets. What schools need to do is abandon the status quo and cultivate this mindset.

Entrepreneur Gulay Ozkan may have found the solution. In her class "The Courage to Create a Business" at Bilgi University in Istanbul, Ozkan pinpoints three dimensions: ecosystem, entrepreneur, and idea.

To determine the ecosystem, Ozkan asks students, where are you? "Being an entrepreneur in an emerging market and an advanced market are two very different things. I ask my students the question, 'Are you aware of your ecosystem?'" says Ozkan. "We need to break people's blindness when they have been stuck in an industry for a long time." Tunnel vision kills innovation.

To help students define what entrepreneurship means for them, Ozkan has them answer the question, who are you? Can you live with your work 24 hours in a day? That directly echoes advice from LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. He'd put his tech career above almost everything else in his life, even his own health.

Third is defining the idea. Ozkan helps students figure out what they want to do. Using design-driven methodologies, the class develops ideas through exercises that let them express the challenges they are facing and their personal dreams.

Ozkan also sprinkles in guest lectures from people like journalist Simran Sethi and former Irish deputy prime minister Dick Spring, exposing the students to some brilliant thinkers who can serve as role models.

At the end of the day, however, entrepreneurship all comes down to execution. Anyone can have a good idea, but execution separates the winners from the losers. When Ozkan’s students actually have to apply the lessons from her class in real life—two of them have even launched an internet insurance startup—that’s what makes everything click.

Although she’s running her class at a university, high schools can easily teach these same lessons. Students need schools to figure this out now. Ending schools' "do as you are told" mindset and letting kids be spontaneous and take leaps of faith would certainly help. I'm only 17-years-old but I can see how as you get older, the ability to unlearn and recover from one’s education gets much more difficult.

If schools look at innovation and entrepreneurship as students’ path forward they'll be able to help young people do what Silicon Valley entrepreneur Sramana Mitra once told India's best and brightest: "Build products. Build companies. And finally, build fortunes."

Snippets (and Some Thoughts on Thunder Shirts)

All through my day I am pummeled with topics to write about. Sometimes it is some crazy thing my dog Luke did (like freak out of his socks yesterday when I walked in the door carrying a staked seven foot tall tomato plant in a five gallon bucket in front of me…which caused me to laugh so hard I almost dropped the plant) and sometimes it is something more serious like a friend’s heartbreak with a dying dog. Other times there is just this on running list of “informational snippets” I think you should know about.

One snippet would have to be the “voluntary recall” on certain production codes for a popular dog food called “Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul” produced by Diamond. More information on the recall can be found on the FDA site.  Reportedly there was Salmonella found in a bag after a dog became ill. The words “voluntary” and “recall” have never really aligned in my mind but I suppose that is just me. When you research the FDA information look at the itty bitty sidebar that says although the food was distributed to only 10 states, sub distributors could have the “potentially affected bags” outside those states the recall is focused on.

And for now the final snippet will be about Thunder Shirts ™. Operating on the same principle of the weighted clothing that has been developed to help calm Autistic children (and adults); snug fitting Thunder Shirts ™ are being billed as the best thing to come down the pike for thunder sensitive dogs. They are also being used as a means of controlling other anxiety driven behaviors in dogs. As with all things in life these shirts work for some but not for others. If your dog is among the ones the shirts work for you could enter a drug free chapter with your dog; however, I must say I am a bit concerned about them under certain circumstances.

My concerns center around the shirts being left on the dog for too long and potentially causing hot  spots, rain rot, etc., since where there are thunderstorms, there is humidity and rain and the shirts would not allow the skin to breath and the fur to dry. I can see an owner thinking “there MIGHT be a storm today so I am leaving it on just in case.” I am also seriously concerned about dogs overheating in them. The primary principle behind these shirts is a very snug fit that helps to calm and control the stress panting. But if you are going to try this new concept out on your dog, please remember that the material of the shirt will cause heat to be trapped on your dog’s body in addition to affecting their panting which is their primary way to cool. In other words, please be careful.

Filippo Preziosi Interview: On Ducati's Four Riders For 2013, Future Developments, And The Spec ECU

Ducati Corse director and Ducati's engineering guru Filippo Preziosi was a busy man at Misano. Besides overseeing the race weekend at the circuit and preparing for the test on Monday, Preziosi spent a lot of time talking to a number of journalists. MotoMatters.com was one of the lucky few who were offered ten minutes with Preziosi, and so we jumped at the chance. In the interview, Preziosi covered a number of topics: the Ducati junior team strategy, Ducati's four riders for 2013, the current and expected developments for next season were all among the subjects discussed. Preziosi also talked about the effect of the spec ECU which will be introduced for 2014, and gave the impression he was not necessarily opposed to the idea. Below is what Preziosi had to say to us:

MotoMatters.com: Next year you have the Ducati junior strategy in place. Can you explain how you see that working in terms of development? Will you have four equal riders or two riders who get equipment ahead of the other two?

Filippo Preziosi: I think the main difference between next year and the years before is that we agreed that every development that will be developed by the company will be supplied to the satellite team by default. In the past it was an option that the satellite teams had, but there are some commercial issues, so sometimes they did it, sometimes they didn't. Now we are more close, so when we develop something for our factory team, we want to supply to the satellite teams, if the riders like the changes. So we would like to be as strong as we can.

Microsoft, Nokia Considered RIM Takeover: Report

Microsoft and Nokia apparently toyed with partnering up for a Research In Motion takeover.

That bit of news comes from The Wall Street Journal, itself quoting the ever-popular "people familiar with the matter." Those sources described the status of the talks as "unclear."

Given its age and prominence in the mobile industry, RIM almost certainly has an immense library of patents, which could prove valuable to any Nokias and Microsofts in search of a little more intellectual-property protection in these litigious times. With RIM's stock performance of late, the Canadian mobile device maker is arguably even more of a bargain than it was six months or two years ago, when similar acquisition rumors also surfaced.

But Microsoft has scored a number of significant legal victories against Android of late, between its campaign of cornering Android manufacturers into licensing agreements, and its minor win against Motorola Mobility with the ITC this week.

Any RIM deal would have come with significant drawbacks for both Microsoft and Nokia. For starters, both the latter companies are firmly bonded to Windows Phone, and Microsoft is planning (along with its manufacturing partners) a series of tablets with the upcoming Windows 8. That sort of ecosystem doesn't exactly merge seamlessly with RIM's, which is in the middle of transitioning from BlackBerry 7 to QNX-based BlackBerry 10.

Nor could Microsoft and Nokia have made a play for RIM in order to secure the latter's hardware, considering a.) Microsoft and manufacturing partners, and Nokia, already have their own hardware portfolios and proprietary design language, thank you very much, and b.) the majority of RIM's portfolio is centered on devices with a physical QWERTY keyboard, which doesn't exactly fit with Windows Phone.

Would Microsoft and Nokia have bought RIM for its corporate business and cloud services? Again, Microsoft is already making its own great strides in the business cloud, and has a significant business audience.

At most, Microsoft and Nokia were just performing their due diligence by sniffing around a little. Buying RIM wouldn't be a good move.

Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively's Lackluster Love?!

Oh deary dear!

The seemingly perfect pairing of Blake Lively and her Green Lantern man Ryan Reynolds may NOT be so enviable after all...

'Cause rumor has it the Gossip Girl wants to be Ryan's wifey for lifey, yet Ryan is adamantly AGAINST getting married... again!

Well, Blake is a doe-eyed young thing while Ryan is ten years her senior AND has experienced a failed engagement (Alanis Morissette) and a failed marriage (Scarlett Johnasson), so it's understandable why he's a bit hesitant to slip a ring on another girl's finger!!

Ah well, hopefully this does not break our fairytale coupling, as we've grown quite fond of the Connecticut-dwelling lovers!

Plus they would make the most attractive babies the world has ever seen so... the superficial future of the human race depends on them staying together!

Ha!
