Abdi’s Story: Addiction, Recovery & Yoga

Can yoga stand in as an alternative to violence and addiction?

The latest episode of URBAN YOGIS on The Chopra Well features the story of a healer and recovering addict who discovered the path to recovery through yoga, meditation, and martial arts. Abdi was fifteen when he moved to New York City from Iran, and the city immediately overwhelmed him. The stress of life as an immigrant, on top of the struggles of being a teenager, eventually led Abdi to drugs and violence. He remembers thinking at one point that his lifestyle would either land him dead or in prison, but as it turned out, there was another path in store for him.

Many people refer to a single point of awakening at which recovery and transformation begin. It may be a near-death experience, a rite of passage, or even a poignant word from a friend that makes us pause and re-evaluate. For Abdi, the back-to-back deaths of several of his friends forced him to step back and take stock of the path he was on. Now, with nearly thirty years’ experience as a healer, Abdi can look back and see the pain and turmoil of his youth as the fodder for his spiritual awakening. As he says in his book, Shadows on the Path, “Pain is what puts us on the journey back to ourselves.”

In his daily work as an acupuncturist and trained shaman, Abdi interacts with patients who, like himself, have suffered from addiction. In fact in Abdi’s opinion all of us confront “the addictive system” throughout our lives, whether we are aware of it or not. “An addict,” he says, “can be anyone who uses a behavior to escape reality or to resist being in the moment.” By that definition, how many of us might be classified as television addicts, or exercise addicts, or reading addicts? How often are we thoroughly present in the moment – and when we aren’t, what are we doing instead?

What Abdi ultimately discovered is that practices like yoga, meditation, and martial arts can be instrumental in the healing process. These practices force us to stay in the moment. They defy numbing addictive patterns by bringing us back to our center, back to the moment. They force us to slow down and make conscious choices about our actions. Yoga, in particular, also encourages self-love by challenging us to find comfort and peace even in the most difficult of positions.

These practices became Abdi’s alternative to violence and addiction. Where the latter are unproductive and lead ultimately to destruction, Abdi found that yoga and meditation provided him with the tools to transform suffering into what he calls “the inner connection.” And once found, there is no need to return to old habits.

Between Dawn and Dusk

My wristwatch alarm begins buzzing at 3:45 AM.  Its high pitched insistence startles me from a deep sleep.  My muscles ache with exhaustion.  3:45 , I’m sure you will agree, is an ungodly hour to rise.

The Australian bush, where we are camped, is still and silent, the sky above a carpet of stars.  The air is cool and crisp, almost autumnal.  My sleeping bag is draped casually over my shoulders, shielding me from the early morning chill.

The freshness of the day will fade quickly.  Of this I am only too aware.  Within a few hours the temperature will climb into the 80’s, then the 90’s.  By early afternoon it will surely top 100.

The desert scrub will provide little shelter from the unforgiving sun.  By late morning, the winds will most certainly begin to gust.  The Big Wet is on its way.  The eight month period without rainfall will come to an end.  The Western Australia climate is unpredictable this time of year.  Headwinds will turn a reasonable 150 kilometer ride on pancake flat terrain into a hellish 10 hours of pedaling.

We will, for a brief moment during the worst heat of the day, contemplate hunkering down under one of the rare acacias.  Calling it a day after a mere 80 kilometers.  But there is water to worry about and diminishing food supplies to consider.

In the end, we will push on, hopeful that the winds will change.   We will be disappointed.

 

Not much shelter from the elements in these barren parts.

Worth the effort?

A recent blog follower made this comment:

All the bicycle travel diaries online use words like “beautiful” and “breathtaking” a lot, but the photos are anything but beautiful, why would I want to spend weeks and months staring at the pavement?

At times, these accusations about bicycle touring are accurate.  Monotonous, dull, boring, repetitive.  Those are the words most people would use to describe the 577 kilometers separating Broome from Port Hedland.

But sunrise and sunset are nothing short of magical. They are, without fail, “beautiful” and “breathtaking.”

As the soft hues of first light brighten the horizon, I pedal along in a state of something near elation.  My fatigue is forgotten, as are the many kilometers that lie ahead.  Dawn and dusk are splendid celebrations of light in this barren and arid part of the world.

Is it reasonable to endure 8 hours pedaling down a sizzling highway in exchange for a few moments of beauty?  Perhaps not.  But the highs are so sublime I am willing to endure the heat, the fatigue and– yes– the boredom of staring down an endless ribbon of road.

Dawn and dusk in the desert is pay-off plenty for the trying times in between.

End of the Outback

Six weeks and nearly 4,000 kilometers and we finally reach our first real Australia city: Perth!  To say that distances in the outback are vast is to state the obvious.   Never before have we biked a region so remote.

After just a few days in urban surroundings, the lonely highway slicing through the barren land is already becoming a blurry memory of struggle against heat, headwinds and repetition.  A steady stream of podcasts was the best antidote against boredom with the bush.

 

 

A long, hot slog through Western Australia.

We encountered, of course, places of sublime beauty.  Karijini National park with its crystal clear rock pools and beautiful gorges.  The rocky outcrops and red earth of the Pilbara region.  And eventually the  stunning sand dunes and turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean coast.

Daily magic was found at sunrise and sunset.  The hours in between were, well, tiresome at times.  Thankfully, Australia shows her true beauty at least twice daily.

We crossed paths mostly with truckies (as the drivers of those massive road trains are referred to), grey nomads (Australia’s version of snow birds), fifo’s (those mine workers with massive salaries –even cleaning staff make upwards of $100,000–who fly in and fly out of the region), and backpackers (young people on working holiday visas who drive around in vans and may or may not have a backpack in their possession).  All we encountered expressed various degrees of pity ( I don’t know how you can stand the heat) and admiration (hat’s off to you) regarding  our outback cycling endeavor.

 

Even the hitchhikers are friendly!

When it came to our need to top up on water, all were eager to help.  At settlements and roadhouses (what I’d call truck stops) we’d weight down the bikes with around 8 liters of water each.  With temps soaring up to 100 Fahrenheit (over 40 Celsius) we’d deplete theserations fairly soon.  No matter.  It sufficed to pull over, lift up an empty water bottle and rest assured the next vehicle came to a screeching halt and replenished our supplies.  Sometimes we even scored a cold coke or some snacks.

Most nights we’d even track down somebody with a caravan and a big tank who’d fill up our 10 liter water bladder.  That meant I’d get a cold shower under the stars and a chance to wash away the day’s sweat and grime.  Bush camping has been one of the great delights of biking through the outback.  The silence and simplicity of pitching up next to a sand dune our sneaking off behind a rocky outcrop surrounded by emptiness is something close to sublime.

Pedaling into Perth was cause for celebration: we’d made it through the outback!  We’ve spent the last few days being spoiled by Antony (a long-time blog follower) and his lovely family.  Ah, the simple joy of a soft bed, a hot shower, a fast internet connection and a full fridge.  Not to mention the excellent company.

Next up is Australia’s Southwest , a place of powerful waterfalls, towering forests, and rugged coastline.  Then it’ll be back to the big empty as we cross the vast Nullarbor plain before winding down part 1 of our Australia tour in Melbourne.

 

A few thousand kilometers separate us from Melbourne (where we'll catch a flight to New Zealand on 10 December) so we need to keep on pedaling!
